Go–Go gets it’s name from a syncopated African drum beat. Go–Go fuses the contemporary and the traditional, African and Australian, exploring identity and belonging through song, dance, drama and comedy. The Go–Go project, founded through Vitalstatistix Theatre Company, is a group of young African leaders from within their communities – innovative and ambitious aspiring actors, singers, dancers, comedians, models and writers. The Port Adelaide Enfield area, where Vitals is based, has the highest proportion of African migrants and humanitarian refugees in South Australia. Needs of this community include literacy and the preservation of culture and language. Go–Go will confront mainstream media images of young Africans, presenting stories of belonging, identity and contemporary issues of concern, exploring stereotypes and asking what it is to be an African Australian.
After spending 2009 in creative development, Slow Awakening premieres in Adelaide in 2010. With beautiful poetic text, this piece brings to the stage the story of Cyril, a smooth rock ‘n’ roller Raukkan Ngarrindjeri man, Ivy, a ballroom dancing Wotjobaluk woman and their daughter, Matilda. 40 years unfold to us using landmarks such as the 1967 ‘Yes’ referendum and the 1988 Bicentenary to tell their heartfelt story. Secrets are revealed in this new Australian play exploring a family’s search for love, meaning and identity. With evocatively crafted design elements; sound, vision and scenic, this is a gentle and moving play by a gifted young writer.
Also touring in 2010 to Murray Bridge, Raukkan and Darwin.
