Go-Go

Vitalstatistix recognises the importance of arts activities in sustaining the well-being of our communities. In South Australia, the Port Adelaide Enfield region has the highest proportion of African migrants and humanitarian refugees. As an active member of our neighborhood, Vitalstatistix has initiated Go-Go, a performance project working with Adelaide’s African communities.

The research phase of Go-Go, which began in June 2008, invited African leaders, community members and young people to identify issues important to their lives.  Questions of identity and belonging as well as the complex negotiation between new and old traditions, were identified as themes to explore through performance. Dance, music, drama, and comedy were named as performative forms through which to explore these issues. Go-Go is led by a focus group of young African emerging artists. Many African refugees are young people with distinct needs stemming from a history of diaspora, war, and disenfranchisement from their birth cultures and languages. Go-Go will confront mainstream media’s images and stories of young Africans, presenting stories of belonging and identity by young Africans themselves. The Go-Go ensemble questions stereotypes, confronts populist notions of 'Africans', and above all, strive to share the rawness of living between and within wildly different cultures.

It will encourage questioning of both Western and non-Western understandings of community, gender, strength, and belonging.

Go-Go will turn our cultural preconceptions upside down and inside out. It will make us laugh, think, and dance.
